Prosperity (artha) is the foundation of Dharma

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Dharma is ‘that which sustains’. ‘Dharma’ is non-translatable word. Material wellbeing and pursuit of wealth are integral aspects of Hindu society. Wealth provides the means to perform dharma, and fulfilling one’s dharma leads to happiness and contentment. Dharma and Artha are interconnected like the ocean and the clouds. Wealth follows wealth. Regardless of our physical state or activity, the pursuit of wealth is constant.

Self-confidence and courage are sources of prosperity. Wealth stays with people who are competent and leaves people who are idle. There is no more pitiable sight in the world than that of people who are struggling to make ends meet.

Farmers should be given loans at 1% interest per year. State should assist farmers with seeds, grains, money and equipment to improve productivity. The prosperity and happiness of any state depend on two pillars: agriculture and commerce. Both groups should offer mutual care and be cared for, protected and supported by the state and society. A country that does not respect its farmers and entrepreneurs will never progress or stay strong.

The state’s power is rooted in its treasury and military. Ocean water is drawn up by the sun, which then spreads clouds that bring rain in all directions. Taxation is similar to moisture of the earth evaporated by the sun. The resources extracted are reinvested back into the community for its advancement and prosperity. Tariffs/duties must NOT be imposed on imported goods that are NOT locally available. The state should collect only one-sixth of its people’s income as taxes to fulfil its responsibilities for their welfare and protection.
